Banksia Awards 2013 launched
23 May 2013

Banksia Foundation launched the 2013 Banksia Awards on 16 May at a breakfast hosted by Banksia's major sponsor, the GPT Group in Sydney. Guest speakers included Matthew Faddy from the GPT Group and Niall Doran from the Bookend Trust (2012 Banksia winners of the GPT Community Grant). John Valastro from Qantas (2012 Banksia winners of the Large Business category) announced the new sponsorship of the Banksia International Award category. SBA CEO Andrew Petersen closed the breakfast with a warm welcome of SBA's new partnership with Banksia. Read more...


Climate Change Matters

Energetics has just distributed a newsletter outlining the major announcements in Tuesday's Federal budget that relate to carbon and energy management, and the Opposition's Budget reply.

Australia's National Atlas of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs) has been awarded with the 2013 Geospatial World Application Excellence Award for Environment Protection and Monitoring at the Geospatial World Forum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The GDE Atlas was developed by a team consisting of leading projects firm, Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM), and Australia's national science agency, CSIRO. Read more...

Why social responsibility is smart business

It is that season again... the American corporate earnings season and activist shareholders will demand their CEOs demonstrate how corporate social responsibility programs benefit them.

Even after 40 years of corporate social responsibility in America and Australia, many still believe it adds nothing to, or even worse, reduces shareholders' profits. But Milton Friedman's description of corporate social responsibility as "hypocritical window dressing" only being acceptable if it "cloaks self-interest" is wrong.

The faith of Americans and to a certain extent Australians in institutions has faltered, and they now expect transparency, social responsibility and two-way communication far exceeding what was demanded in the past.

Research by Michael Barnett, Vice Dean of the Rutgers Business School, reveals that firms with the highest corporate social performance also have the highest financial performance, as long as they establish credibility with stakeholders by making a commitment to social investments over time.
